Brett mulled over Amanda’s comment about always believing she had used him as a sperm donor. An inner voice persisted that she’d used him. But he truly believed he could let his hostilities go, not let it affect their marriage.

He’d give anything to be able to go back and relive their wedding night. He’d cherish Amanda and show her the respect and tenderness she’d deserved for being his wife and the mother of his child. What was done was done. He only hoped he could make it up to her somehow. Someday, maybe she’d forgive him.

He spooned beef stew into two bowls and set them on the table. He walked to Amanda’s bedroom, where she was putting her clothes into drawers. She glanced up and smiled. “It was really great of your family to put together an entire wardrobe for me.”

“They’re not all new.”

“I don’t mind. They’re nice.”

Brett admired the way Amanda accepted the used clothes graciously. She’d probably been used to the best. “Better eat before it gets cold.”

During lunch, they ate in silence taking in the sounds of their new environment.

Brett loved the peacefulness of the area. “I thought I’d check out the fishing equipment and see if I can catch fresh fish for supper. Beats canned stew.”

“Can I help?”

“You know how to fish?”

“With a cane pole. That’s all we ever used at the summer camps I attended.”

“I’ll show you how to cast with a rod and reel.”

Later that evening on the beach, Brett stood behind her with his arm around her while his other hand guided the rod they both held. The vast gulf appeared crimson as the sun set. Water raced up around their ankles, leaving white foamy bubbles as it receded. His feet sank deeper in the wet sand. The air reeked of salt and fish. Seagulls cried out overhead.

He breathed in her faint rose scent. The heat from her body permeated into his, sending urges of desire through him. He wanted to kiss her.

He remembered how lovely she’d looked in the white nightgown she’d worn on their wedding night. The sheer material had revealed her breasts and the golden patch of hair between her legs. She’d looked like the goddess, Athena. The memory caused a first-class erection. Brett stepped back to prevent Amanda from feeling it.

Once she had the hang of casting, Brett cast his line into the water, trying to land it beyond the pounding surf. The wind blew through her long, black wig, giving her a carefree look.

She smiled and pointed down the beach. “Is that a stork?”

“It’s some kind of crane.”

“It’s really big. It’s gawking at us. Look at the size of that beak.”

Brett laughed. “That bird is waiting for one of us to catch a fish. Then he’ll try to steal it.”

After three fish had been caught and put in the bucket, Brett noticed the bird edging closer. “Amanda, we’re about to have company.”

“Does he bite?”

“I doubt it.”

Her eyes expressed her uncertainty for being on the same beach with the big bird.
